Taming the Envious Monster-in-Law

Ah, the infamous monster-in-law! It’s a trope that has been played out in countless movies, TV shows, and stand-up comedy routines. But for many women, dealing with a difficult mother-in-law is no laughing matter. It can be a source of stress, tension, and even strain on their marriage.

According to a common belief, you marry a person and their family as well. And while it’s true that having a good relationship with your in-laws can make your life easier, it’s not always the case. In fact, some women are not so lucky to have a supportive and understanding mother-in-law and instead have to deal with one who seems like she was made in hell.

I’m not sure if most women would agree with me, but this conflict is something many husbands are afraid to get involved in. For many women, it’s a fight they have to face by themselves. But fear not, my fellow daughters-in-law! I have come up with some life tips to tame a difficult mother-in-law.

  1. Show her you’re not someone to mess with.

This may sound harsh, but sometimes it’s necessary to establish boundaries with your mother-in-law. If you’ve done your part and very best to get along, but she still constantly tries to interfere in your marriage, it’s time to use your strategic weapon. Show her that you are not an easy target and that she cannot manipulate or control you. By acting calm and assertive, it makes her less likely to push you around.

Don’t be too accommodating and don’t give into her drama. Limit your visits and invitations to her. Let your husband deal with her. This may seem harsh, but remember that your main goal is to protect and preserve your marriage. And if that means keeping some distance from your MIL, then so be it.

  1. Keep her out of your social media circle.

In this age of social media, it’s tempting to add all our family members on Facebook or Instagram. But when it comes to a difficult mother-in-law, it’s best to keep her out of your online life. Why? Because she’s like the evil eye, always looking for something to criticize or make a fuss about.

By not adding her or restricting her from seeing all your happy moments, you’re not giving her any ammunition to use against you. And for financially dependent MILs, seeing your vacation and luxury purchases may just give her ideas on how to ask for money. So save yourself the headache and keep her in the dark about your social media life.

  1. Stand your ground and assert your role as the queen of your household.

Remember, you are the wife and you are the queen of your own home. While it’s important to respect and maintain a good relationship with your in-laws, it’s also crucial to assert yourself as the head of your household.

If your MIL tries to make snide comments or give unsolicited advice, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and shut her down. And if she tries to play innocent and give you backhanded compliments, learn how to counter those attacks with some sass of your own.

It is important to understand though that hating your mother-in-law is not the right solution. While it may be difficult, it is necessary to be sensitive to where the feelings of jealousy are coming from. It is possible to respect the person while not agreeing with their attitudes or behavior. Sometimes, showing kindness and empathy can help your mother-in-law realize her faults and wrongdoings. It is crucial to keep in mind that all the actions we take have one ultimate goal – to protect our family and our own sanity.

At the end of the day, remember that you are not alone in dealing with a difficult mother-in-law. It’s important to communicate with your spouse and have a united front when it comes to dealing with her. And if all else fails, just remember that this too shall pass and one day you’ll be able to look back and laugh about it (maybe).

But in all seriousness, having a difficult mother-in-law is not an easy thing to deal with. So it’s important to take care of yourself and not let her negativity affect your well-being. And who knows, with these tips, maybe you’ll even be able to turn that mother-in-law from hell into a tolerable one.
