The 2022 Philippine Presidential elections have come and gone, yet the effects of it still linger in our society. While politics has always been a divisive topic, this election was different. It caused immense division among friends, relatives, and even brethren in the faith. As someone who is deeply disappointed with the way things turned out, I would like to reflect on what happened and share my thoughts on how it has affected us as a society.

One of the most disheartening things that I have witnessed during this election is the involvement of churches and religious leaders in endorsing a particular candidate. In the past, churches have always been seen as a source of unity and refuge for people, regardless of their political beliefs. However, this time, I saw how some churches joined in the political debates and openly expressed their support for a specific candidate. This caused great division among their churchgoers, who were left confused and conflicted.

As someone who has always looked up to these religious leaders for guidance and inspiration, I was disappointed to see them shedding their true colors and favoring one candidate over another. It seemed as though they forgot their duty to promote unity and love among their flock. Instead, they added fuel to the already burning fire of division in our society.

What was even more disheartening was the way people started judging and labeling one candidate as “evil” because of the mistakes or sins of their father. This election has become so personal that even family ties and friendships were strained because of differing political views. As a result, I have seen people I once considered close friends or relatives turn against each other, hurling insults and accusations based on their political beliefs.

As a Christian, it deeply saddens me to see how so many people have forgotten what it means to be Christlike. Instead of showing love, compassion, and understanding towards one another, there is a lot of judgment, condemnation, and disrespect towards those who support a different candidate. It is disheartening to see how Christians have become so consumed by their political views that they have forgotten the most important aspect of our faith – to love one another as Christ has loved us.

This election has also affected me personally, as I have found myself minimizing my social activities and even unfollowing friends on social media because of the negativism it brings. It is disheartening to see how something as important as choosing a leader for our country has caused so much division and animosity among us. I have always believed that diversity in opinions and beliefs is what makes our society beautiful, but the events of this election have made me question that belief.

But despite all the disappointment and division that this election has caused, I believe that there is still hope for unity and healing. As a society, we need to learn to respect each other’s opinions and beliefs, even if they differ from our own. We need to remember that at the end of the day, we are all Filipinos, and we all want what is best for our country. We need to focus on finding common ground rather than highlighting our differences.

As Christians, we should also remember that our ultimate allegiance is to God, not to any political leader or party. Our faith should guide us in how we treat others, regardless of their political beliefs. We should strive to be peacemakers and bridge the gap between those who are divided by this election.

In conclusion, the 2022 Philippine Presidential elections have indeed been one of a kind – but for all the wrong reasons. It has caused immense division among friends, family, and even brethren in the faith. But instead of dwelling on the negative effects, let us use this as an opportunity to reflect on how we can promote unity, love, and understanding in our society. Let us remember that we are all Filipinos, and we should work together towards a better and more united nation.
